Hawley Tarpon

Fly fishing in the Florida Keys isn’t all sunny and smooth, but the rewards are big all the same. Amid less than ideal conditions yesterday – cloudy, windy, rainy – a good number of tarpon were caught by contenders on the first day of this week’s annual Don Hawley Tarpon Fly tournament. Three teams each caught 3 tarpon on Monday, while several others caught 1 or 2 each. This posted picture shows my angler and friend Sam Kaufman fighting the one he caught and released. There were two others that he hooked but they got away – Doh! The forecast for the next few days calls for similar weather. Thankfully tarpon aren’t scared of a little rain!
