Types of Fishing

Backcountry Fishing

Redfish, snook, trout, snapper, shark and more await anglers of all abilities in the breathtaking beauty of Florida Bay’s backcountry. These species make excellent targets for less experienced anglers, as well as the expert.

Schools of speckled sea trout are ideal for the beginning fly caster. Sharks are always good for a backcountry thrill and snapper can keep the kids’ rods bending for hours. Snook – with their trademark black dorsal stripe, and redfish – famous for the black spot on their tails, put up a noble and aggressive fight. Your captain will give you pointers on how to keep them from getting tangled and lost in the mangrove roots.

Fly Fishing

Picture yourself holding a carefully selected fly as you hold it and the lighter than air 9-weight fly rod selected for today’s battle. The Florida Bay, teaming with life, for a while seems deserted. And then, a fin suddenly pops up from the water and carves the still water’s surface – a prized fish grazes below.

Your artfully placed cast makes the tail pause…then a twitch of the fly makes the fin react and strike!

Fly Fishing, Florida Keys

Whether you’re after redfish, bonefish, snook, tarpon or permit; snapper, grouper, cobia, sea trout or sharks – fly fishing brings the thrill of the hunt to the bow of the boat. If the rivers out west are where you usually wet your line, then you and Capt. Steve have something in common. He guided in Colorado for trout before seeking out Florida’s year-round fishing 13 years ago.

The techniques and tools used in saltwater fly fishing can be a bit different, but no matter. Capt. Steve will bring all the required tackle, and help you grow your angling abilities to include the demands of the ocean and its bounty. Never floated a fly before? Capt. Steve can schedule some pre-charter instruction, or coach as you dabble on board.

Spin Fishing

The waters surrounding the Florida Keys are full of fish to catch: redfish, bonefish, snook, tarpon, permit, snapper, grouper, cobia, sea trout, sharks. Which one will fall prey to your carefully cast jig? If you’ve fished the sea before, then you know there are scores of tools and techniques used to capture your target.

And Capt. Steve has just about all of them for you to use on your charter.

Spin Fishing, Florida Keys

Is this your first time angling away from freshwater? Saltwater spin fishing skills may differ slightly from what’s practiced in bass ponds. But no matter – Capt. Steve Friedman will patiently coach you over the learning curve, to help you coax that catch of a lifetime onto the end of your line. On your charter with Capt. Steve, he will supply all the tackle and bait you’ll need.
